By using an Artificial Intelligence system, Meta is enabling people to build sections of virtual worlds simply by describing them. The concept, called Builder Bot, could serve as the focal point of drawing people to the ‘Metaverse’ virtual reality experiences and could also progress Artificial Intelligence technology that powers machine-generated art.
Mark Zuckerberg, gave a demonstration where he walked viewers through the process of using Builder Bot to create a virtual space. Using commands such as ‘let’s create some trees’ prompted the bot to create a cartoonish 3-D landscape of trees in front of him. Other commands ranged from requests to add clouds to including sound effects by commanding ‘play some tropical music’. The video demonstration that Mark Zuckerberg gave does not clarify whether Builder Bot draws on a library of human-created models or if Artificial Intelligence plays a part in creating the designs.
OpenAI’s DALL-E, Nvidia’s GauGAN2, VQGAN+CLOP, and like Dream by Wombo are some examples of AI projects that have shown image generation based on textual descriptions. However, these are well-known projects that involved creating 2-D images without interactive components even though some researchers are working on 3D object generation.
As shown and demonstrated in the video by Meta, the Builder Bot uses voice input to add 3D objects that users can walk around but Meta has been aiming for more ambitious interactions. Zuckerberg promised, “You’ll be able to create nuanced worlds to explore and share experiences with others with just your voice”. Meta made several other announcements during the event, one of which mentioned plans for introducing a universal language translator, the latest version of conversational AI system, with an initiative to build new translation models for languages without large, written data sets.
Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged the sophisticated interactivity, which also includes the different kinds of usable virtual objects which pose major challenges. Artificial Intelligence generation can create moderation problems if users ask either for offensive content or the Artificial Intelligence training model reproduces stereotypes and human biases around the world. The fact of the matter remains that we do not currently know the limits of the current system in place. So it should not be expected to see Builder Bot spring up in Meta’s social VR platform but it can be expected to get a taste of Meta’s plan for its Artificial Intelligence future.
